Who is MathsWiz Tutoring?

Let me introduce myself....

My name is Paul and I have 13 years experience in teaching mathematics both in the U.K. and internationally. I qualified in 2010 with a 1st Class Honours degree in Mathematics Secondary Education BSc (Honours) from Edge Hill University in Lancashire.

Over my time as a mathematics teacher I taught a broad range of age groups which has given me experience in all parts of the curriculum and examination requirements from Year 6 up to Year 13 . I have a wide range of knowledge and teaching techniques that can be adapted to suit the differing needs of the learner.

This experience enables me to offer tuition covering all areas of the English mathematics curriculum including: A Level and AS Level mathematics courses (Pure, Mechanics and Stats, the new 2017 spec) , GCSE and IGCSE (at both Higher and Foundation tiers, 9 - 1 spec) and all of Key stage 3 (years 7-9). I also have in depth knowledge of how a student can maximise their marks on external exams, having spent many years marking and being familiar with GCSE/IGCSE/AS/A2 mark schemes. Knowing the small things that may be needed to squeeze out a few more marks that can make the difference between those grades.

Whilst working as a classroom teacher, leader of achievement for learning and as a head of department I have seen the impact that personalised tuition can have on a student's understanding and also in their enjoyment of the subject, especially when it gives them that all important 'light bulb moment'. Whether you are working towards that 9, trying to raise that 4 grade to a 5 or doing everything you can do to avoid the U grade, giving a student that feeling of achievement, regardless of the level is what makes teaching so worthwhile.

Online tuition is an area that has seen vast improvements over the last couple of years. Due to my international teaching over this time I have gained vast experience in this area (my school in the middle east encountered 2 years of school closures, during which time we taught the classes fully online), I honed skills on using interactive software to ensure that remote learning can have a positive impact on a student's attainment.

My tutoring philosophy...

Mathematics can be very difficult if there are some underlying concepts which you are struggling to get your head around. Learning new concepts in maths is akin to successfully putting together a series of building blocks; you cannot successfully start to build the first floor of your house until the ground floor is there, before you can build the ground floor you need solid foundation upon which to build.

It is understandable in a busy classroom, which in some cases exceeds 30 students, it is not always possible for a student to get the help and attention they need to enable them to plug these gaps in their knowledge to strengthen these foundations. This is where carefully planned and tailored tuition can help.

Initially I will use a system of diagnostic questioning to help understand the weaknesses of my students. Only then once this is known can the process of strengthening a students understanding begin.

Before the first session the student will be sent an online diagnostic questions assessment, this will take them approximately 30-40 mins to complete, this is FREE with the cost of the first session. This saves both time/cost and means we can get to work straight away. This report will generate areas that we can focus on in the initial sessions. The aim is to fill in those underlying gaps and then extend knowledge, to strengthen and improve the students understanding and ultimately improve their overall attainment.

Sessions can also be adapted to cover homework, revision for a test or something they want to gain confidence with. This ensures that there is curriculum flexibility.

AS/A2 Level sessions usually take a bit more of a student led approach as it may be that the student already has particular aspects of the course they wish to focus on.
